Taipei 101 - taiwanese food in kuching

Posted on 12 July 2009 by Stewie

Came across this Taipei 101 restaurant  at RH Plaza Kuching. If you can’t find it, just look for Expert foodcourt, its just behind it. Else, look for Taka Bakery, its just around the corner. Never been to Taiwan before but I think the restaurant environment settings looks good and “homey” feel.  Airconditioned, no wifi, comfortable wooden chairs and tables.

Ordered few dishes. I ordered the Taiwanese Style Pork and rice. Its about RM6.00 if not mistaken. Comes with vege and taufu. Nothing much to comment on it. So-so taste. Could have tried other more unique dishes. The side dishes, I ordered the bittergourd with salted egg. I think its very good. 5/5 for it. Not too bitter and not to salty. Just the right taste. Rm6.00 for that.

Another dish was the Spicy noodle with medium level of spiciness. You can ordered spicy, medium spicy or very spicy. Its advisable that you order the normal spicy. The medium spicy gave me a volcanic sensation in my mouth. It was good but at the same time suffering. Can’t recall the price for it but its about the average RM5 or so.

Ah Lim’s Bak Kut Teh at Sin Chew Cafe

Posted on 08 July 2009 by Stewie

Had my breakfast at Sin Chew Cafe, ordered the Bak Kut Teh at Ah Lim’s Bak Kut Teh stall. It comes with “yu cha kueh” as shown in the pic below. I ordered two bowls of yu cha kueh. I usually dip it down in the herbal soup and let it soaked till its soft before eating it.

Cost me total of RM7.20 for the whole set. Drink not included. Rating 5/5.

Cuttlefish With Kang Kong

Posted on 08 July 2009 by Stewie

Ah Liong Cafe which is located at BDC is my usual stopover place before heading or returning from the Kuching International Airport. Its just about 5 mins away from the airport. Went there today and had some light snack. I ordered the Cuttlefish with KangKong vegetable. Cuttlefish is known as “sotong” locally. The portion is up to you, either order the RM3, RM4 or the RM5 for larger portion. I had the RM4.00 which is enough for two person. Its rather hard to find a well prepared one in Kuching recently. Maybe the good old recipe is dying out.

I find this one from this particular stall taste good and still maintain the quality. Some other stalls, you may find the sauce abit bitter due to the mixture of the KangKong vege or some sauce are too watery.

Posted on 30 June 2009 by Stewie

Crispy noodle, or more commonly known as Hong Kong Style Fried Noodle. In local hokkien dialect, its known as “Kwong Hu Cha Mee”. You can find this at stall number 9 and its on the signage menu infront of the stall at Hui Sing open air food market. Another common eatery place among the locals. There are many stalls there which offers variety of different food. Pork Satay, Noodle, chicken rice, fast food, finger foods etc etc..

Healthy Laksa at Sin Chew Cafe, Jalan Pending

Posted on 20 June 2009 by Stewie

What makes this laksa unique? The usual laksa you find elsewhere  is cooked with santan (coconut milk) , whereas this one is cooked with condensed milk. Coconut milk is very high in fat and cholestrol when boiled for long duration. It will not be good for diabetics as its too high in cholesterol. So if you ever craved for a healthier version of laksa, you can always try this one. Regular laksa - RM3.50 with prawns!

Another one which I always ordered, the Kay See Mee / KC Mee. No its not a person’s name. It basically means chicken meat noodle.  Noodle portion is generous. Can’t recall the price for this, I think its about rm3.00
